정책포럼 "환경과 경제성장: 실용적 접근"

This policy forum will bring together experts to discuss innovative approaches to addressing local and regional environmental threats such as water pollution, yellow dust, and waste from industrial and extractive industries. Factors underlying environmental problems will be analyzed and best practices from around Asia will be presented for discussion. Through discussions, we expect to inform and enhance the efforts of governments, civil society and the business community to combine poverty reduction with a healthy environment.

아시아재단은 오는 10월 30일 서울에서 "환경과 경제성장: 실용적 접근"을 주제로 정책포럼을 개최할 예정입니다. 본 포럼에서는 아시아 각 국가 및 지역 수질오염, 황사, 천연자원 개발산업을 포함한 산업 폐기물 등의 환경 위험요소에 대처하기 위한 혁신적 방법을 논의할 것입니다. 환경문제의 원인에 대해 분석하고 이에 대처하는 우수사례들에 대한 발표가 이루어질 것입니다. 이를 계기로 건강한 환경을 통해 빈곤퇴치를 함께 조화시켜 나가려는 정부, 시민사회, 기업 등에 정보를 제공하고 그 노력에 일조하고자 합니다.

The Friends of The Asia Foundation will host a reception for Dr. Marcus Noland, Senior Fellow at the Institute for International Economics, in Seoul on November 11, 2008. Dr. Noland will speak on prospects for resolving the North Korea nuclear issue in the context of U.S.-Korea relations. Detailed information about the venue and time will be announced soon.

Mr. Park Young-Ju, Chairman of Eagon Industrial Co., Ltd. and Chairman of the Federation of Korean Industries' Committee on Social Affairs, and Dr. Park Jin, Member of the National Assembly, recently joined the Board of Directors of the Friends of The Asia Foundation Korea.

Michael H. Armacost Chairs the Board of Trustees of The Asia Foundation

마이클 아마코스트 전 미 대사, 아시아재단 이사장으로 선출

Ambassador Michael H. Armacost was appointed Chairman of the Board of Trustees of The Asia Foundation in June, 2008. Ambassador Armacost, currently a Shorenstein Distinguished Fellow at Stanford University's Shorenstein Asia-Pacific Research Center, served for 24 years in government, including as Undersecretary of State for Political Affairs and as ambassador to both Japan and the Philippines. He has been on the Foundation's Board since 1994, as Vice Chairman since 2002, and succeeds Mr. William L. Ball, III. The Asia Foundation also announced two new Vice-Chairpersons of the Board, Dr. Harry Harding and Ms. Milbrey Rennie.

마이클 아마코스트 전 미 대사가 지난 6월 개최된 아시아재단 이사회에서 전임 윌리엄 볼 3세에 이어 이사장으로 선출되었습니다. 현재 미 스탠포드대 아시아태평양연구소에서 수훈연구원으로 재직중인 아마코스트 대사는 24년간 미 국무부 부차관부와 주일본대사 주필리핀대사 등을 역임한 미 정계 베테랑으로 지난 1994년 아시아재단 이사로 선임되었고 2002년부터는 부이사장을 맡아 활동해 왔습니다. 한편, 해리 하딩 조지워싱턴대 교수와 밀브리 레니 미 외교관계위원회 위원이 신임 부이사장으로 선임되었습니다.
Study Visit to the Philippines on "Peace-building and Development in Conflict-affected Regions"

아시아 개발 지원사업 "분쟁지역 내 평화구축과 개발"

Under the partnership between The Asia Foundation and KDI School to support international development cooperation, the second "Asian Development Study Trip" took place from August 24 to 31. Six participants from Korean NGOs, government, academia and media, including a representative from KOICA, visited the Philippines to examine ways in which the multifaceted conflicts in that country affect development activities and how such conflicts can be managed. The delegation met with leading conflict and development experts at the Office of the Presidential Adviser on the Peace Process and the World Bank, as well as representatives of NGOs and institutes. They also visited local communities implementing programs on poverty reduction, microfinance and conflict resolution. The study visit was planned and facilitated in cooperation with The Asia Foundation's Philippines Office.

아시아재단과 KDI국제정책대학원이 공동으로 시행하는 국제개발협력 지원 사업의 일환으로 아시아재단은 지난 8월 24일부터 31일까지 1주일간 필리핀에서 2차 "아시아 개발 지원사업"을 진행하였습니다. 한국국제협력단 직원을 포함한 한국 정부기관, 학계, 언론, NGO 분야 전문가 6명이 참가한 이번 사업에서는 필리핀 내에서 광범위하게 발생하고 있는 분쟁이 필리핀의 개발에 어떤 영향을 미치고, 또 이는 어떻게 관리되고 있는 지를 관찰 조사하였습니다. 파견단은 필리핀 정부기관, 국제기구, NGO 등 분쟁 전문 기관의 전문가들과 만나고 빈곤퇴치, 마이크로 파이낸스(저소득층을 위한 소액금융서비스), 분쟁해결 등의 사업을 시행하고 있는 분쟁 지역을 직접 탐방하였습니다. 본 프로그램은 아시아재단의 필리핀 지부가 공동으로 기획하고 실행하였습니다.





A Delegation of Vietnamese Government Officials Visits Korea

베트남 고위공무원 대표단 한국 연수
2008년 8월 3~9일

The Asia Foundation organized a visit to Korea by a delegation of Vietnamese government officials from August 3 to 9, for the purpose of examining Korea's legislative institutions and policies on government personnel recruitment and training, as well as studying Korea's economic and political transition. The delegation consisted of ten key officials from the Office of National Assembly, the President Office, the Ministry of Home Affairs, the Central Party Committee, and the Office of Government. The delegation was led by Dr. Nguyen Si Dzung, Vice Chairman of the Office of National Assembly. The group visited Korean policy-related institutions such as the National Assembly Secretariat, Prime Minister's Office, Presidential Council on National Competitiveness, Institute of Foreign Affairs & Security, and the Central Officials Training Institute. They also had meetings with experts from the Korea Development Institute, National Security Institute, and Yonsei University Hills Governance Center to share information, experiences and lessons learned from Korea's strategies for economic development and recovery from the 1997 financial crisis.

베트남 고위공무원 대표단이 아시아재단과 KDI국제정책대학원의 지원으로 지난 8월 2~9일 한국을 방문하여 한국의 입법 기관, 인력개발정책, 경제개발 과정 등에 대한 이해를 도모하였습니다. 뉴엔 지 중(Nguyen Si Dzung) 베트남 국회사무국 부의장(차관급)을 단장으로 하는 이번 대표단은 국회사무국을 비롯해 대통령실, 내무부, 중앙당 등의 핵심 공무원 10명으로 구성되었습니다. 대표단은 국회 사무처, 국무총리실, 행정안전부, 중앙공무원교육원, 국가경쟁력강화위원회 등의 국가기관을 찾아 정부개혁, 정책분석 및 조정, 공무원 임용 및 교육훈련 등을 시찰하였습니다. 또한, 한국개발연구원, 국가경영전략연구원, 연세대학교 힐스거버넌스센터 등에서 한국의 경제개발 과정과 1997년 외환위기 극복 등을 주제로 경험과 교훈을 교환하였습니다.





President of The Asia Foundation, Mr. Douglas Bereuter, Meets Korean Partners

더글라스 비라이터 아시아재단 총재 방한

Mr. Douglas Bereuter, President of The Asia Foundation, visited Seoul from July 20 to 22. During his visit he met with corporate and government leaders to discuss effective and strategic cooperation toward shared goals of peace and prosperity in the Asia-Pacific region. Mr. Bereuter also exchanged views on Korea-U.S. relations and Korea's expanding role in international development cooperation. Among others, Mr. Bereuter met with the President of the Korea International Cooperation Agency, the Dean of KDI School for Public Policy and Management, and the Chairman of the Asan Institute for Policy Studies. On July 22, Mr. Bereuter delivered a talk to a group of business, government and civil society leaders at a luncheon hosted by the Friends of The Asia Foundation in Korea, chaired by former Prime Minister and Asia Foundation Trustee Lee Hong-koo. Mr. Bereuter's speech was entitled "Challenges in U.S.-Asian Relations Awaiting a New American President." The JoongAng Ilbo, one of Korea's major daily newspapers, conducted a dialogue with Mr. Bereuter and Mr. Lee concerning current issues in U.S.-Korea relations and the work of the Foundation. 지난 7월 20~22일 아시아재단의 더글라스 비라이터(Douglas Bereuter) 총재가 방한해 한국국제협력단 총재, KDI국제정책대학원 원장, 아산정책연구원 이사장 등 아시아재단의 한국 사업과 관련된 정부기관, 학계, 기업 인사들과 만나 향후 협력방안을 논의하고 한국의 국제개발협력 현황과 한미관계 전망 등 재단의 주요사업 분야에 대한 조언을 구하였습니다. 22일(화)에는 아시아재단우호협회(이사장 이홍구)의 초청으로 열린 오찬연설회에 참석해 "Challenges in U.S.-Asian Relations Awaiting a New American President"라는 제목으로 미국 대선 이후 미국의 아시아 정책에 대해 전망하였습니다. 이 밖에 중앙일보와 가진 인터뷰에서도 이홍구 전 총리와 아시아 지역 정세 및 한미관계 등에 대해 대담을 나누었습니다. "아시아 분쟁 지역에서의 개발원조: 현장경험과 그 시사점"

This conference addressed the issue of providing development assistance in conflict areas in Asia, such as Afghanistan, Timor Leste, Sri Lanka, Nepal and southern Philippines. International experts, Korean policy makers, as well as TAF managers of development projects presented the challenges and risks of development assistance in conflict affected regions of Asia. They discussed practical strategies for development assistance in the context of fragile states and areas of conflict, and generated recommendations for government and NGOs.

아시아재단은 지난 7월 7일 서울 프레스센터에서 "아시아 분쟁 지역에서의 개발원조: 현장경험과 그 시사점"이라는 주제로 정책 포럼를 개최하였습니다. 본 회의에는 국내외 개발전문가, 정책전문가, 아시아재단 소속 개발협력 및 분쟁문제 전문가들이 참석해 아프가니스탄, 동티모르, 스리랑카, 네팔, 남부 필리핀 등의 아시아 분쟁지역에 개발원조를 제공하는 데 따른 문제점을 논의하고 각자의 현장 경험을 바탕으로 효과적인 원조접근법을 모색하였습니다.

Fellowship and Internships at the Korea Office

아시아재단 한국지부 펠로우십 및 인턴십

Mr. Dennis Arroyo, Director of National Planning and Policy Staff at the National Economic and Development Authority in the Philippines, spent two months in the Korea Office conducting research on Korea's economic development with a focus on the Park Chung Hee era. Mr. Arroyo recently completed a term as a Corporate Affiliate Visiting Fellow at Shorenstein Asia Pacific Research Center sponsored by The Asia Foundation. Ms. Li Qing, a graduate student at the Center for East Asian Studies of Stanford University, worked as a summer intern assisting TAF projects and conducting research on the condition of Chinese women migrants who were married to Korean men.

아시아재단 한국지부는 2008년 하계 펠로우십과 인턴십을 실시하였습니다. 데니스 아로요 필리핀 국가경재개발당국 기획정책국장은 아시아재단이 후원하는 2007-2008 스탠포드대 객원연구원으로 선발되어 프로그램의 일환으로 최근 2개월 간 아시아재단 한국지부에서 박정희 시대에 초점을 맞춘 한국의 경제개발을 연구하였습니다. 스탠포드대 동아시아연구센터에서 석사과정을 밟고 있는 리칭은 하계인턴으로서 재단의 사업을 보조하며 한국 남성과 결혼한 중국 이주 여성에 대해 연구하였습니다.





2008-2009 Luce Scholar Selection

2008-2009 루스 장학생 선발

Dr. Ian Daniel Simon was selected as 2008-09 Luce Scholar to participate in a 10 months long internship program at the Science & Technology Policy Institute based in Seoul starting in September. He earned his master's and doctorial degrees in Microbiology from Yale University. The Asia Foundation manages the placement and support of Luce Scholars throughout Asia.

이안 다니엘 시몬이 미국 헨리루스재단이 후원하는 2008-2009 루스장학생으로 선발되어 이번 달부터 앞으로 10개월간 한국 과학기술정책연구원에서 인턴십을 수행할 예정입니다. 이안 다니엘 시몬은 예일대학교에서 미생물학 석사, 박사 학위를 받았습니다. 아시아재단은 루스재단이 선발한 장학생들을 아시아 전역 관심 기관에 배치하고 10개월간의 활동을 지원하는 역할을 맡고 있습니다.





2008-2009 Harvard Nieman Fellow

2008-2009 하바드 니만 저널리즘 펠로우 선발

Mr. Choi Jae Hyun, Reporter of the Korean Broadcasting System, has been selected as a 2008-09 Nieman Journalism Fellow at Harvard University and started the program in July along with 28 journalists from the United States and abroad. Mr. Choi will study international politics and explore possible changes in the role and policy of the United States in North East Asia due to the rapid growth of Chinese influence in the region. His fellowship is supported by The Asia Foundation, the Sungkok Journalism Foundation, and YBM, Inc.

한국방송(KBS) 최재현 기자가 2008-2009 하바드대 니만 저널리즘 펠로우십에 참가할 한국 언론인으로 선발되어 미국과 세계 각 국에서 선발된 언론인 28명과 함께 지난 7월 프로그램을 시작하였습니다. 최재현 기자는 급속히 커가는 중국의 동북아 지역 내 영향력으로 인한 미국의 동북아 정책과 역할의 변화에 대해 연구할 예정입니다. 본 펠로우십은 아시아재단, 성곡언론문화재단, YBM, Inc.에서 선발, 후원합니다.
AMERICA'S ROLE IN ASIA

Held on a quadrennial cycle, America's Role in Asia (ARA) examines critical issues in U.S.-Asian relations through a series of high-level discussions across Asia and the U.S. These strategic working groups culminate in reports published by The Asia Foundation that provide specific foreign policy recommendations from top Asian and American experts for the next U.S. administration. An advance, electronic version of the 2008 recommendations was released in conjunction with the Democratic and Republican National Conventions, where presidential candidates will define their policy platforms. The published volume, "America's Role in Asia: Asian & American Views", will formally debut in Washington, DC, on September 10.
