"동남아시아에서 한국의 역할 변화: 한-동남아시아 관계 발전 모색" 국제회의, 3월 20~21일

On March 20~21, The Asia Foundation and Institute of East West Studies of Yonsei University will co-host a two-day conference on "Korea's Changing Roles in Southeast Asia: Expanding Influence and Relations" with leading Korean and Southeast Asian scholars, co-sponsored by Korea Foundation and Pacific Century Institute. The conference builds on two previous seminars entitled "Current Issues in Korea's Relations with Southeast Asia" and "Korea's Role in Southeast Asia" based on a research project led by Dr. David Steinberg of Georgetown University.

아시아재단은 3월 20~21일 양일간 연세대학교 동서문제연구원과 공동으로 동남아시아에서 한국의 역할 변화와 그 관계 발전을 모색하기 위한 국제회의를 개최합니다.한국국제교류재단과 태평양세기연구소가 공동 후원하는 이번 국제회의는 David Steinberg 美 조지타운대 교수의 주도로 지난 해 8월과 10월 서울과 싱가포르에서 각각 개최된 "한-동남아 관계 현안", "동남아시아에서 한국의 역할" 세미나에서 한국과 동남아 관계 전문가들이 발표한 사항들을 바탕으로 개최됩니다.





America's Role in Asia 2008, Korea Workshop in March(Invitational workshop)
미국의 아시아에서의 역할, 한국 워크숍 3월 개최(비공개회의)

The Asia Foundation will launch its quadrennial project "America's Role in Asia" in spring 2008 to promote U.S. - Asian dialogue on key issues and to formulate recommendations on U.S. policy towards Asia. As the first step of this project, three Asian sub-regional workshops will be held in New Delhi, Singapore, and Seoul. In May 2008, the three Asian regional chairs will meet with the American working group in Washington, D.C. to discuss the content of their respective regional workshop discussions. The Seoul meeting will be chaired by Ambassador Han Sung-Joo, President of the Asan Institute for Policy Studies.

The purpose of the project is to bring together a group of policymakers, scholars, and private sector representatives from Asia and the U.S. to examine the security, economic, and political challenges occurring in Asia. The expert groups will explore the implications of these challenges and produce reports making recommendations with respect to U.S. policies and priorities in Northeast, Southeast, and South Asia. These recommendations are intended for the next U.S. administration and Congress elected in 2008.

아시아재단은 한미간 주요 현안에 대한 토론을 활성화시키고 미국의 대 아시아 정책안을 제시하려는 목적으로 "America's Role in Asia" 프로젝트를 시행합니다. 프로젝트의 첫 단계로 뉴델리, 싱가포르, 한국에서 아시아 지역 워크숍을 개최하며, 이를 바탕으로 3개국 아시아 지역 의장들과 미국측 전문가들이 5월에 워싱턴 DC에서 최종 워크숍을 가질 예정입니다. 서울 워크숍은 한승주 아산정책연구원 원장이 의장직을 수행합니다.

이 프로젝트는 미국과 아시아의 주요 정책전문가, 학자, 민간부문 대표들이 모여 아시아의 안보, 경제, 정치 도전과제를 살펴보고 이 도전과제가 주는 함의를 알아보면서 최종적으로 정책 의견을 담은 보고서를 미국 정부, 의회에 제출하는 프로젝트입니다.

2008년 아시아재단우호협회 총회 겸 신년 하례식

On February 19, Friends of The Asia Foundation Korea, chaired by former Prime Minister Lee Hong-Koo, hosted its Annual General Meeting (AGM) and New Year's reception.

Mitchell B. Reiss, former U.S. Ambassador and now Vice Provost of International Affairs at the College of William & Mary, delivered a special lecture on "America's Asia Policy in a Rapidly Changing Environment." Amb. Reiss addressed some of the recent developments and trends in Asia as well as in America and assessed what these developments mean for Korea and the ROK-US alliance. The AGM was moderated by former Foreign Minister Han Sung-Joo, a member of the Board of Directors of Friends of The Asia Foundation.

The AGM was attended by the individual members and corporate representatives of the Friends and distinguished leaders representing the political, government, business, diplomatic and academic sectors in Korea. Of special note were Kim Kiwhan, a board member of Friends of The Asia Foundation, Martin Uden, British Ambassador to Korea, Kim Chang-Beom, Ambassador for Korean Peninsula Peace Regime, and James Spackman, President and CEO of Prudential Financial Korea.

아시아재단우호협회(이사장 이홍구)는 지난 2월 19일 총회를 겸한 신년하례식을 개최하였습니다.

한승주 아시아재단우호협회 이사의 사회로 진행된 이 날 행사에서는 미첼 리스(Mitchell B. Reiss) 윌리엄앤메리대학(College of William & Mary) 국제관계학 부학장이 특별 초청 연사로 참석해 "급변하는 지역 정세 속에서 미국의 대 아시아 정책"에 관해 연설하였습니다. 리스 부학장은 아시아와 미국의 최근 동향과 정세를 언급하면서, 이것이 한국과 한미관계에 미치는 함의에 대해 역설하였습니다.

이 날 행사에는 아시아재단우호협회 이사로 활동하고 있는 김기환 골드만삭스 국제고문, 문국현 창조한국당 공동대표를 비롯해 마틴 유든(Martin Uden) 주한영국대사, 김창범 외교통상부 평화체제교섭기획단장, 제임스 스팩맨 한국푸르덴셜그룹 회장 등 협회의 법인, 개인 회원 뿐 아니라 주한 외교사절, 국내외 정계, 재계, 학계 등 사회 각 계 인사 160여 명이 참석하였습니다.

"Introduction to Community Foundations" & "A Hybrid Approach to Corporate Engagement"
presented by Barnett Baron, February 12 and 15
아시아재단 바넷 배론 총괄부총재: "지역 재단 소개"와 "기업의 전략적 사회 참여를 위한 새로운 접근", 2월 12~15일

During a recent visit to Seoul, Barnett Baron, Executive Vice President of The Asia Foundation, participated in a conference on Soft Power in Northeast Asia, co-organized by the Korea Foundation and the East Asia Institute. Dr. Baron also made a presentation on the emergence and role of community foundations at a seminar co-hosted by the Hope Institute and The Beautiful Foundation.

In a separate event, The Asia Foundation and the Friends of The Asia Foundation Korea hosted a lunch talk by Dr. Baron on "Google, Omidyar, and Social Investment: A Hybrid Approach to Corporate Engagement." Dr. Baron addressed the emerging field of social enterprise offers the promise of using both nonprofit and for-profit approaches to create sustainable social value. The talk was attended by executives and CSR directors of foreign and domestic companies based in Korea.

바넷 배론 아시아재단 총괄부총재는 지난 2월 12~15일 나흘간 '기부' 분야에서의 오랜 경험과 전문지식을 바탕으로 기업의 사회 참여와 지역재단에 관한 글로벌 트렌드와 선진 사례를 한국의 관계 전문가들과 공유하였습니다.

바넷 배론 부총재는 한국국제교류재단과 동아시아연구원이 공동 주최하는 컨퍼런스에 토론자로 참석하여 '동북아시아에서 소프트 파워'에 대해 논의하고, 희망제작소와 아름다운재단이 공동주최하는 지역 재단포럼에서 지역재단의 역할과 기원에 대해 발표하였습니다.

또한, 아시아재단우호협회가 주최한 오찬회에서 "구글, 피에르 오미디아르 그리고 사회적 투자: 기업의 전략적 사회 참여를 위한 새로운 접근"을 주제로 국내외 기업 사회공헌 담당자들에게 강연하였습니다. 이 강연에서 바넷 배론 충괄부총재는 사회 기여 기업이 영리적인 방법과 비영리적인 방법을 연계함으로써 지속적으로 사회 공익을 창출할 수 있는 가능성에 대해서 언급했습니다.

Dialogue on NGO Partnerships with Bilateral Development Agencies
양자개발기구-비정부개발기구 파트너십에 관한 토론, 1월 29일

Roderick Brazier, The Asia Foundation's Representative in Cambodia, and Barbara Groth, a specialist in program design from the Foundation's San Francisco headquarters, recently visited Korea to discuss how international NGOs such as The Asia Foundation can partner with official development assistance(ODA) agencies to help governments deliver aid more effectively. They shared with Korean officials and private organizations the Foundation's experience throughout Asia as a partner with major governmental development assistance agencies (such as USAID, AUSAID, UK DFID).

아시아재단의 로더릭 브래지어 캄보디아 지부 대표와 바바라 그로스 본부 프로그램 개발 부국장이 지난 1월 27~29일 방한, 한국의 ODA(공적개발원조) 관계 정부 및 민간 전문가들과 만나 효과적인 원조 전략을 논의하고, 아시아재단과 양자개발기구의 공동 프로젝트 수행 경험을 공유하였습니다.
From China: Cleaning Up Pearl River
중국의 주장강 수질개선 노력

The Asia Foundation is supporting a pilot project to promote cleaner industrial production in Guangdong Province, China. Working with local economic development and environmental protection policymakers, enterprises, industry associations, suppliers, local experts and communities, the project aims to reduce the quantity of heavy metals discharged into the Pearl River. Through international and domestic study tours, data collection and monitoring, training workshops and implementation support, the project aims to introduce cleaner production models to the pilot industries in the area.

아시아재단은 중국의 경제개발-환경보호 정책 담당자, 기업체, 산업협회, 원자재 제조업체 등의 지역 단체와 협력해, 중국 주장강 일대에서 배출되는 중금속의 양을 줄이는데 초점을 둔 파일럿 프로젝트를 후원하고 있습니다.





From Indonesia: Poverty Reduction Plans
인도네시아: 빈곤 퇴치 프로젝트

Despite continued economic growth in 2007, nearly half of Indonesia's population lives on less than two U.S. dollars per day. With recent decentralization measures, there are now greater opportunities for Indonesian citizens to participate in the policy-making process and to hold local governments accountable for delivering services. Building on decades of collaboration with Indonesian organizations, The Asia Foundation is helping to bring together their local knowledge and influence with the technical expertise of budget and policy advocacy organizations to advance pro-poor development policies.

Through this initiative in provinces and districts, Foundation partners are helping local governments draft poverty reduction development plans, and encouraging transparency by monitoring budget processes and, in some cases, publishing municipal annual budgets.

2007년 계속되는 경제 성장에도 불구하고, 인도네시아 인구의 절반은 하루에 2달러 미만으로 생활하고 있습니다. 최근 인도네시아의 지방 분권화로 보다 많은 시민들이 정책 입안 과정에 참여할 수 있게 되었으며, 수십 년 동안 쌓아온 인도네시아 현지 기관들과의 협력 관계를 바탕으로, 아시아재단은 현지 사정에 밝고 영향력 있는 현지 기관과 예산/정책에 전문성을 지닌 기관이 협력하여 친 빈곤 정책을 추진할 수 있도록 지원하고 있습니다.

각 지역 및 지방에서 추진하고 있는 초기단계 지원을 통해 아시아재단의 파트너 기관은 현지 정부의 빈곤감소 정책 수립을 지원하고 있으며, 투명성의 제고를 장려하기 위해 예산처리과정에 대한 모니터링을 수행하고 일부의 경우 시 당국의 연간 예산 보고서를 발간하고 있습니다.
