Twenty-one international Asian observers arrived in the Philippines and received foreign observer manuals in Zamboanga on May 6, 2007. The COMELEC-accredited observers came from Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Thailand, Indonesia, and Malaysia and deployed on Monday to each of the six provinces in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM). The observer mission was being coordinated by the Asian Network for Free Elections (ANFREL) and supported by The Asia Foundation with funding from the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA). During their deployment in the ARMM, the observer team members were hosted by six local Muslim civil society groups that had signed a memorandum of agreement (MOA) with the Parish Pastoral Council for Responsible Voting (PPCRV) on April 3, 2007. This MOA marked a full-fledged partnership between the Catholic-based PPCRV and Muslim organizations to conduct joint election monitoring.

Supporting the role of the media in Pakistan
ÆÄÅ°½ºÅº ¾ð·Ð Áö¿ø »ç¾÷

In Pakistan, The Asia Foundation supports the role of the media through building local capabilities in investigative reporting, and has created partnerships with mainstream print and broadcast media outlets throughout Pakistan. The Asia Foundation¡¯s media program recently convened a national consultation on investigative journalism in Pakistan that included senior editors of English and Urdu dailies, weeklies and other magazines from across the country. The program facilitated discussion of the problems facing journalists and potential solutions to advance investigative journalism as well as discussed how to improve the quality of Urdu publications.

The Foundation has also helped to produce a range of public policy documentaries through a 6-part series on the ¡°History of Democracy in Pakistan¡±, to review why democracy has had such a turbulent history in Pakistan and what lies ahead for the future. In addition, documentaries are being produced on the upcoming 2007 elections, the 2005 earthquake, missed opportunities for peace between India and Pakistan, and the state of law enforcement in Pakistan. These documentaries will appear on local television and cable stations across Pakistan.
