Friends of The Asia Foundation¡¯s Annual General Meeting and New Year¡¯s Reception
- ¾Æ½Ã¾ÆÀç´Ü¿ìÈ£Çùȸ ÃÑȸ ¹× ½Å³â ÇϷʽÄ
The Friends of The Asia Foundation held its annual general meeting and new year¡¯s reception at the Westin Chosun Hotel on January 18. The reception was attended by over 100 guests and included special guest speaker and TAF Trustee, David Michael Lampton, Dean of Faculty, George and Sadie Hyman Professor, and Director of China Studies at the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies. Chairman of The Friends of The Asia Foundation, Lee Hong-Koo, gave welcoming remarks, and Edward Reed introduced 2006 program highlights and 2007 plans. David Lampton made special remarks on ¡°The Faces of Chinese Power: Implications for America and Its Allies.¡±

New TAF Trustee, Dr. David Michael Lampton Visits Seoul
- ¾Æ½Ã¾ÆÀç´Ü ÀÌ»ç µ¥À̺ñµå ¸¶ÀÌŬ ·¥ÅÏ ±³¼ö ¹æÇÑ
Newly appointed member of the Board of Trustees of The Asia Foundation, David M. Lampton, visited Seoul from January 17-20. A specialist in Chinese domestic politics and foreign policy, he has written a new book on China, The Three Faces of Chinese Power: Might, Money, and Minds, which will be released later this year.

In addition to participating in the annual meeting of the Friends, Dr. Lampton gave a talk at a brown bag faculty meeting at the Institute of Foreign Affairs and National Security and delivered a lecture at the Graduate School of International Studies at Korea University.


The North Korean Nuclear Test and the Future of Northeast Asia
- ¾Æ½Ã¾ÆÀç´Ü-ÅëÀÏ¿¬±¸¿ø ÁÖÃÖ Åä·Ðȸ, ¡®ºÏÇÑ ÇÙ ½ÇÇè°ú µ¿ºÏ¾ÆÀÇ ¹Ì·¡¡¯
On December 4, The Asia Foundation Korea and Washington D.C. Offices, in cooperation with the Korea Institute for National Unification, hosted a seminar in Washington D.C. focusing on the recent North Korean nuclear test and its implications for US-ROK relations and regional security. The conference featured presenters and discussants from both Korea and the United States who explored this important development through three panel discussions entitled ¡°Directions on North Korea Policy in the Wake of the Nuclear Test¡±; ¡°South Korea-US Relations in the Wake of the NK Nuclear Test¡±; and ¡°The Future of Northeast Asia Following the NK Nuclear Test.¡±

East Asia Community Building Workshop
- µ¿¾Æ¾Æ½Ã¾Æ °øµ¿Ã¼ ±¸ÃàÀÇ ¹Ì·¡
The Asia Foundation organized a workshop on ¡°East Asia Community Building¡± on November 29 in Seoul. At this invitational meeting, chaired by Chairman Lee Hong-Koo, Korean experts discussed the economic, political and diplomatic, and social and cultural dimensions of building an East Asian community and Korea's role. This event is part of an Asia-wide project that aims to foster dialogue between Asians and Americans on issues related to building an East Asian Community.

President of The Asia Foundation Douglas Bereuter on Corporate Community Engagement
- ¾Æ½Ã¾ÆÀç´Ü ÃÑÀç, ±â¾÷ÀÇ »çȸ °øÇå¿¡ ´ëÇØ ¸»ÇÏ´Ù
President of The Asia Foundation Douglas Bereuter visited Seoul from November 8-10. During his visit, he made a major presentation to a group of distinguished business leaders on the topic of ¡°Corporate Community Engagement and the NGO Sector: Trends to Watch.¡± The dinner meeting was hosted by The Asia Foundation and the Friends of The Asia Foundation at the COEX Intercontinental Hotel.

During his visit, Mr. Bereuter also addressed the American Chamber of Commerce Korea General Membership Meeting on the topic of ¡°Corporate Community Engagement: Current Trends, New Possibilities.¡±





Announcements

Second Shipment of Books to North Korea
- ºÏÇÑ ±³À° ±â°ü¿¡ µµ¼­ ±âÁõ
The second shipment of educational materials to North Korea was delivered late fall of last year under The Asia
Foundation¡¯s Books for Asia program. Some 8,666 books, books on tape, CD-ROM, and journals were received by the Grand People¡¯s Study House in Pyongyang for redistribution within the country to various educational institutions.

B. HIGHLIGHTS FROM ASIA


Mongolia Natural Capital Conservation and Environmental Protection Program
- ¸ù°íÀÇ ÀÚ¿ø ¹× ȯ°æ º¸Á¸ »ç¾÷
On December 1st the Asia Foundation launched its newest and most ambitious program in Mongolia. The three-year Dutch-funded effort is entitled: ¡°Securing our Future: Mongolia Natural Capital Conservation and Environmental Protection Program.¡±

The program is comprised of elements that will build a strong partnership between, public, private, and NGO sector representatives in an effort to promote a common framework of understanding and knowledge leading to responsible mining that protects environmental and human health.

Women and Islam
- À̽½¶÷°ú ¿©¼º
A study tour for twelve South Asian scholars and activists to Malaysia and Indonesia took place in fall of last year as part of the Women and Islam program. The group met with local organizations that are working on social justice and gender within Islam in Indonesia, and participated in a gender training course conducted by Sisters in Islam in Malaysia. Following participation in the study tour, one participant from Afghanistan, Mr. Enayatullah, an imam at a small mosque in Kabul, enabled fifteen women to attend the nightly Khatem prayers at the mosque during Ramadan. This was the first time that women had ever been allowed to attend the Khatem prayers.
